There is a lot to love about this show; the cast are strong, and the onstage band who interact in the main diner setting is a fun touch.

Mrs. Chuckles | Hannah GadsbyHannah Gadsby is the thinking woman’s comedienne. Her sharp witticisms are imparted via a droll delivery that not only immediately endears her to you, it also means her jokes quite often sneak up on you. This is because Gadsby is a talented storyteller. Jokes you hear early on in the show are revisited throughout to delightful effect, and she never loses sight of where she’s going. Don’t let Gadsby fool you when she insists her latest show Mrs. Chuckles doesn’t have a dramatic finish, it does, and it’s fabulous.

Gadsby is wonderfully self-aware and deliciously self-deprecating; the show named after her inability to master small talk. Another key subject in the hour long show is what our last words will be when we depart this earth. Inbetween there are tales of growing up in Tasmania, travel stories, what happens when we’re dumb enough to attend our highschool reunion, and of course the obligatory Gadsby exposé on what it means to have big hips and be a prudish lesbian.

Gadsby’s material is extraordinarily good, but her delivery is the clincher. She can describe someone with the slightest twitch of an eyebrow. As her popularity grows I hope she continues to perform in intimate spaces because you really need to see all the little nuances of her expressions to get the full effect of her face-hurting comedic talents.

See Mrs. Chuckles. And prepare to laugh. Just remember “circular heads”. It’ll keep you chuckling for the whole of the next day.
